"I Will Lay My Hand Upon You by the Hand of My Servant."

I’ve entitled my talk, “I Will Lay My Hand Upon You by the Hand of My Servant,” coming from Doctrine and Covenants, section 36. I was asked, and a couple of days later I was impressed to talk about patriarchal blessings, and to me, this phrase captures that the Lord will lay His hand upon us by the hand of His servant.

As I think about things that really matter and truth, not all truth is created equal. I have a blue suit on. That is truth, but it doesn’t matter. The most important truths that we can learn are truths about ourselves. Learning who we truly are is the most important knowledge that we can have. To realize that we are sons and daughters of a loving Heavenly Father is the most important truth we can come to understand.

"Trust in the Lord with all Thy Heart"

Jon Schmidt:

We had a chance to speak to one of our heroes in our life a few months back, Elder Gene R. Cook. And one of the things that he said that was so impressive to us is that, when you speak, don’t think that you are the speaker; don’t think that you are the teacher. He said, realize that the Lord is the teacher and then he said how important it was to pray for the Spirit as you speak. So, Michelle and I have been praying for days that the Spirit would be with us and that we would remember in the moment who the speaker is, when we share our testimonies. I want to thank the choir for singing with the Spirit. It’s a wonderful, wonderful way for us to be helped today. I appreciate that so much. I have to say that I know President and Sister Kusch from way back, so I feel so blessed to be with them today. At an early concert that I did in California, they let me stay at their home, so it is really great to renew old friendships today. Awesome.

"Living a Life with Purpose."

In 1988, after graduating from university studies, my wife and I moved our small family to Los Angeles.  Everything seemed bright and exciting, and we felt like we were beginning a new life with a real adult job.  I had graduated with a finance degree and I was excited to begin my new career in the investment business. After a few months, and as things settled in, I became more and more confident in my new responsibilities.  One morning, I had scheduled an important review meeting with one of my clients, a successful cardiologist. When I arrived, I was told that he was visiting with a patient and was not available. I became frustrated as the wait became longer and longer.  I was full of self-importance, and began murmuring that I wasn't just a patient, but was there on important business in regard to my client's financial future. Finally, my doctor client came rushing in.

"Pressing Forward with a Perfect Brightness of Hope."

Thank you for that beautiful song, for inviting the spirit, I appreciate that. Good morning my dear Brother & Sisters.  It’s truly an honor to join President & Sister Kusch, my sweetheart Kristi and all of you here at the LDSBC Devotional. I understand many of you are far from home and yet we are all like a postage stamp.  We get licked, we get depressed, we get stuck in a corner and get sent from place to place. But we always succeed and arrive in the right place if we just stick to it. As we continue to go from place to place in all our travels wherever that may be, I’m reminded that when we fly, I think of three things:  Faith, Hope & Gravity. I love being back on the ground and being with my sweetheart and my family and loved ones. Thank you for coming today, you could have been anywhere else, but you came… and therefore, you are pressing forward with a perfect brightness of hope.

"Building Your Life"

What a blessing to be amongst faithful young disciples from all over the world. I wholeheartedly embrace the international flavor of LDS Business College students, especially given that I have been resident in the US for only 7 months myself. The rest of my life has been lived in Australia and West Africa. So, I welcome all who are here, including my fellow “aliens” as we are apt to be called on entering this country.

"All Edified of All."

Dear brothers and sisters, it is a great privilege to be with Elder Kim B. Clark, Brother Kelly Haws, President Bruce C. Kusch, and each of you in this Church Educational System devotional at the LDS Business College. I am always happy when I can be together with Sister Gong.

About a year ago—January 25, 2018, to be exact—I was grateful to come to the campus for three special experiences.

First, President Kusch and members of the LDSBC Administration and Executive Council generously shared with me the mission, capacities, and plans. Subject matter immersion and deep learning help us (1) learn by study and also by faith, (2) become capable and successful, and (3) unlock divine potential as disciples of Jesus Christ. Thank you!

Second, I met a cross section of delightful LDSBC students—with surnames from A (Ronda Lee Acosta from San Marcos, California, majoring in paralegal) to R (Katherin Rincon from Venezuela).

"The Strait and Narrow Path"

The Strait and Narrow Path

Thank you for coming to devotional today. I am grateful for the opportunity to share a message with you. I pray that the Spirit will speak to you as you listen, and that you will feel uplifted and inspired in a way unique to your needs.

Every Monday night at BYU–Idaho, we met with students on campus for a Home Evening Q&A.  At first, I felt that I was in no way qualified to answer their questions. But as President Clark continued to hand me the microphone throughout the years, I found more confidence, and realized that I had the answers to many of their questions.

"Living After the Manner of Happiness"

Good morning dear friends.  I am honored to have the opportunity to address you here in this beautiful theater!  One Sunday after speaking in a Stake Conference in Chile a sweet, older sister came up to me and thanked me for my talk.  Then she said, “Soon you will be speaking from the Conference Center.” I wish I had her phone number, so I could call her and tell her that her prophesy came true today.  I am speaking from the Conference Center!

"Preparing to Learn, Lead, and Serve Like the Savior"

It is an honor and joy to be with you here today. I speak often in different settings within Utah, the United States, and globally, and speaking where I can discuss the Savior of the World is by far my favorite.

Elder Uchtdorf once said, “God sent you here to prepare for a future greater than anything you can imagine…God knows of your successes…He knows of the times you have held onto the fading light and believed—even in the midst of growing darkness. He knows of your sufferings. He knows of your remorse for the times you have fallen short or failed. And he still loves you…He loves you not only for who you are…but also for the person of glory and light you have potential…to become.”

Cleave Unto the Covenants Which Thou Hast Made

I’m excited to be with you today. I love this college and its mission. I’m grateful to be with President Kusch and your administration and instructors, and to be with my friends who serve as your institute teachers. They are all wonderful people and disciples of Jesus Christ. You will learn a lot in your classes, but you can also learn a lot from watching the great people who work here so don’t miss that part of your education.

With the limited time we have I want to jump right in. We’re going to be in the scriptures so will you have them ready? I want to start in section 25 of the Doctrine and Covenants which is a revelation given through the prophet Joseph Smith for his wife Emma.

"Life is What You Make of Plan B"

It is such an honor and a privilege to be with you today, I have been praying for you and about you for weeks and I know out Heavenly Father is mindful of you and it is truly my honor. Victor and Aurora and the bc singers have done a great job of inviting the spirit to be with us today.

I’m a planner—an OCD, define every step, every strategy, every risk, every contingency, every message, every channel kind of planner.

So, raise your hand if your life has gone exactly according to plan. Really? ME, TOO!! No really, thank HEAVENS! I truly thank my Heavenly Father, the eternal father of my spirit.

For God has had a much better plan than I EVER imagined. A plan that has stretched me in every way, and driven me to my knees when it seemed there was no way.

Sister Kusch: "A Soft and Teachable Heart," President Kusch: "A Whole Sole Soul Offering"

Alynda Kusch, “A soft and teachable heart”

It is wonderful to be with you today and we welcome you to another great semester at LDS Business College.  It looks like everyone survived their first day of classes and we are happy about that.

I have an older sister. Her name is Arlene and she is 2 years older than me. We have always been good friends and I love her.

This is a picture of us together – you can see that Arlene is taller, when we were younger though my mother dressed us alike and even though my sister’s hair was kind of reddish when she was younger I was shorter with black hair people would ask if we were twins.
