Grounded, Rooted, Established, Settled

Grounded, Rooted, Established, Settled

I salute you this morning as a generation of promise and destiny. Never has there been upon the earth more of a need for the youth of the kingdom to take upon them the responsibilities of the restored gospel, and never before has there been a generation more willing to shoulder these responsibilities. I express to you my love and my respect.
This is a wonderful time to be living upon the earth. Never before has there been such opportunity, such freedom, such luxury. Our world is becoming a global village. Two examples that were brought to my attention this week have reinforced that description. A young student friend of ours told us this week that she had purchased tickets to travel to Paris for four days with her friends. The cost of the round trip ticket, $200.00.

Hastening the Work

Hastening the Work

It's a delightful honor for me to be here with you today. I have to tell you, I really resonate to smaller schools. I've been to all sizes of them, and the ones I really enjoy are the smaller schools.
This last year has been a very, very busy time in Church headquarters. Many of you are aware of some of the things that have happened but maybe some of you aren't aware. In the 88th Section of the Doctrine and Covenants, the 73rd verse, the Lord said he would hasten His work in it's time. As I've thought about that, I've wondered if this isn't one of the times when the Lord is really hastening the work along. I'd like to share with you some of the things that happened last year, and then see if you don't agree with me that there is some real hastening.

Born of the Spirit By: D. Todd Christofferson

Born of the Spirit

The First Presidency in a letter to priesthood leaders dated January 23, 1998, announced that, "In harmony with instruction given in the revelations, the confirmation of new convert members will no longer occur at the time of baptism but will be performed in a subsequent sacrament meeting of the ward or branch in which the new member resides." This modification in what had been Church practice for some years will have several salutary effects. Certainly as new members are confirmed in a sacrament meeting, they will be identified to the ward or branch members who inevitably will be anxious to greet and welcome them into the fellowship and community of saints. Among the most important consequences of this change will be the added recognition and importance accorded to the ordinance of laying on hands to confer the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Repentance - a Fresh View of God

Repentance - a Fresh View of God

Thank you, Dr. Brown, and thank you all for all being here. We understand that you are coming to the end of the school year, and this is the last of the devotionals. We are grateful you are here. I thank Margot Butler and the beautiful choir and above all, my secretary, Diana Torres, who offered the opening prayer. When we presided over the South America North Area, Diana was my wonderful secretary and it is so nice to be with you again. My, how your English has improved, Diana. The college has had a great impact on you.
